How do you know if your loved one is simply getting old and struggling with their memory and learning new tasks, or if there is something more serious going on with their brain health? That is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for many who are just beginning to develop dementia symptoms but haven’t reached out for help yet.

For many years, they might feel they can manage life on their own (and for many of them, they can). They just might need a little help here and there to help them stay safe and live mostly independently until things get more serious and they require professional 24-hour home care.

Signs of Early-stage Dementia

Each person who develops dementia will develop different symptoms at a different rate. Some people will learn early on how to use techniques to help them manage the early symptoms. So, as a loved one, especially if you don’t live near your elderly loved one, you might not notice these early symptoms until they begin to interfere with your loved one’s daily living.

  • Memory loss is the most common and often most noticeable symptom of dementia. While some memory loss is normal, with dementia, the memory loss becomes more severe and can interfere with how your loved one manages their day or week. He might forget important appointments, to take his medication, or to turn off the stove after he’s done.
  • Reduction in concentration is another early symptom of dementia. Your loved one might struggle to stay engaged in a conversation or be able to safely navigate the roads.
  • Increased confusion. Again, it’s normal to become confused sometimes, especially when learning something new. But for those with dementia, confusion can start to inhibit their ability to do things they’ve always enjoyed, like make a meal, drive to their church, or sort through their bills.
  • Becoming withdrawn. Because of the changes occurring in the brain, your loved one may begin to withdraw from some of his favorite activities or his favorite people. He might become apathetic to what’s going on in the world around him.
  • Struggle to perform daily tasks. The increased confusion, memory loss, and reduced ability to concentrate can all get to a point where completing daily tasks becomes more of a struggle. You might notice your loved one wearing the same outfit every day or not combing his hair. He might always have a cup of coffee in the microwave as he tries to rewarm it, but forgets it there each time. Bills might not get paid, and if he has a pet, it might not be getting the care it needs.
