You might think that being a caregiver just means that you’re going to have stress no matter what you do. But in reality, there are some things you can do today to give yourself a shot at less stress tomorrow.
Trim Your Tasks
How realistic is your task list for the next day? You probably wrote down everything you could think of, which is a lot. The reality is that you only have so much time during the day to get things done. You’ll do a lot, but not everything. So give your brain a bit of a break and pick three tasks you’ll focus on tomorrow. If you have time and energy, you can do more. But if you only get those three things done, that’s got to be enough.
Do Some Deep Breathing Before Bed
When you’re thinking about getting ready for bed, take some time to do some deep breathing. This can help to put you in the right frame of mind to start relaxing for sleep. The act of breathing deeply helps to calm your brain and your body, which is what you need right before you try to go to sleep. Try doing this for a few minutes at a time and see how much more relaxed you feel.
Unplug Early
If you’re using any sorts of screens before bed, including your television, that might be working against your best efforts to get to sleep. Try unplugging before you get ready for bed. Blue light blockers on your phone or tablet can help, but it’s best to go old school with things like reading before bed. Grab an actual book or magazine if you still need to read before turning out the lights.
What Are You Doing Just for You?
One more thing to remember is that you should ideally be doing at least one thing just for you each day. If you don’t already have your one thing picked out, you might want to start including that as part of your task list for the next day. Your “just for you” task can be anything you want it to be, as long as it’s truly just for you.
Nothing can promise that you’ve fully whipped stress for tomorrow already today, but you can reduce the likelihood that you’re going to be overwhelmed by stress. When you focus on doing what you can to prepare for the next day the right way, you’re ahead by a little bit.
